If there's been one thing that's grabbed the attention of the media
and music and entertainment fans worldwide lately, it's been the discovery
of Susan Boyle
on Britain's Got Talent. Videos of her audition for that show have been watched
by countless numbers of people for weeks now. She's become an overnight
celebrity. Her face and her story is in magazines and no doubt,
everyone now will be waiting to hear what happens next, from will she get a
makeover to how will she do in the next elimination round. And of course, all of
this commotion has to do with the fact that she's one of the world's great
talents that never got discovered or didn't have the chance to pursue her
dream when she was young. No wonder she sang "I dreamed a dream" for her
audition and now her dream has become reality.
Of course, we can't all have Susan Boyle's luck. We don't have an
"Ontario's Got Talent" show for our entertainers that will be seen worldwide on
even on local television! But that doesn't mean we don't have hordes of
undiscovered talents out there who still love to sing, dance, do comedy or
simply entertain.
I had the pleasure recently of participating in the GOLDEN AGE of
VARIETY show in Hamilton. The large cast consisted of seniors, 55 and up ...
all the way up to their 80's ... who sang, danced and laughed their way into the
audience's hearts for 2 1/2 hours, often to a standing ovation. Who couldn't
applaud 82 year-old Muriel who tap-danced and high kicked like a 16-year-old, or
Bob who sent chills down everyone's spine as he sang that famous classic, "Old
Man River".
The comedy troupe had everyone in stitches with their version of "If
I were not upon this stage" where Jo's face and timing cracked everyone
up.
And when the show closed with those leggy dancers giving it
everything in "Sing, Sing, Sing", everyone forgot that this is entertainment by
seniors.
The only thing senior in this show was the ages. These people are all
still so young at heart they prove there's no such thing as being too old
and that you're never too old to dream a dream and make it come true.
